LE RÊVE DE NIKOLAY

NIKOLAY'S DREAM
by Maria Karaguiozova
Country: Belgium, Bulgaria
Year: 2017
Duration: 47'

Today, Nikolay Djambazov works as a skipper for tourists. But in 1985 he was the protagonist of a dream, a dream of freedom which made him a hero in the eyes of many of his fellow Bulgarians. A factory worker, ever since the 1970s he had been building a boat to leave his country, which at the time was part of the Communist bloc. He had an apparently crazy dream: to solo circumnavigate the globe. He was catalyzed by the desire to break through the Iron Curtain and show himself, and those like him who wanted to feel free, that there are no borders which cannot be crossed. Over thirty years later, the director Maria Karaguiozova decided to meet him and have him tell her what that adventure meant to him. And above all, what it means to finally be free.
