OUT OF THE BLUE

OUT OF THE BLUE
by Dennis Hopper
Country: Canada
Year: 1980
Duration: 94'

Late 70s. In the deepest corner of the American heartland, Cebe struggles with her impossible family situation, which she cannot seem to get away from. She feels conflicted about Don, her father, an abusive alcoholic truck driver, and her mother Kathy, a fast-food employee addicted to drugs. One day, while driving drunk, Don hits a school bus with his truck, killing fifteen children and ending up in jail. Despite the severity of the crime, he only gets a five-year sentence. While her father is behind bars, Cebe develops a non-conformist and rebellious streak. To escape from the brutality of the world and the hostility of the society surrounding her, she seeks refuge in the music of Elvis and the budding punk scene. Her mother, instead, keeps on doing drugs, spending time with her coworker and sleeping around with different people. Don’s return home only exacerbates this already tense situation, pushing it over the edge.

Dennis Hopper

Dennis Hopper (Dodge City, KS, USA, 1936 - Venice, CA, USA, 2010) made his screen debut in Nicholas Ray’s Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and performed several minor roles in many Hollywood productions.
