Christophe Agou

Christophe Agou (Montbrison, France, 1969-2015), autodidact, discovered photography during his travels in Europe and the United States. In 1992 he moved to New York and in 1998 he began taking portrait shots of subway passengers, which were then collected in the book Life Below. His works have been published and exhibited throughout the world, from New York’s MoMA to the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Jeu de Paume in Paris, the Pilar y Juan Miró Foundation in Palma de Mallorca, and at the French festival Rencontres d’Arles. During the winter of 2002, Agou returned to France, to his homeland region of Forez, where he met numerous farming families, including the protagonists of his documentary Sans adieu, which was released posthumously after his death in 2015 and was presented this year in the ACID section at Cannes. These same locations are pictured in his work Face au silence, which received the 2010 European Photograph Publishers Award. The next year, he photographed and filmed the tour of the Tindersticks, the band of Stuart A. Staples, who composed the soundtrack of this documentary.
