A multimedia project created in 2011 by the Portuguese director Filipa César who, after meeting Sana na N’Hada and Flora Gomes, two directors who were trained in Castro’s Cuba, becomes enthralled with the hundreds of hours of footage about the war of independence in Guinea-Bissau (1963-1974) in the possession of the two directors. In order to save these rare images, which are decaying, the three go to Berlin, where they transpose them into digital form, after which they decide to return to where the footage had been filmed over forty years earlier. There, they construct a small traveling cinema to show the local people edited footage of this previously-unseen material, which is screened for the first time where the clashes took place. Later, the comments of the audiences are added to the film, creating a mechanism in which the archival material, which until then was anchored in a long-ago and – under certain aspects – unknown past, comes back to life, interacting with the present and creating new meanings.

Filipa Cesar
Felipa César (Porto, Portugal, 1975) is an artist and filmmaker. She studied art in Porto and Lisbon, where she graduated in fine arts. She then left Portugal and moved to Berlin, where she attended the Konrad Wolf Academy of Film and Television and earned a master’s degree at the Academy of Arts. With her experimental projects from 2008, she started working on Portugal’s recent history, and from 2011 she launched in a series of researches on Guinea-Bissau’s film history. Her works have been presented in major film festivals, including the Berlinale, Rotterdam, Oberhausen, DocLisboa, and have been displayed in several exhibitions and art galleries, like the Serralves Foundation in Porto, the Tate Modern in London, and the São Paulo Art Biennial.
