Declaration

film director

“I would be lying if I said I didn’t feel a great sense of pressure at depicting this event that left such a deep scar on contemporary Korean history. I asked myself, ‘Can I really portray such a major event on the screen effectively, without tarnishing it?’ Despite my concerns, the thing that pulled me into the story of A Taxi Driver was its two main characters […]. In 1980, Jürgen Hinzpeter was working as a foreign correspondent in Tokyo. However when he heard of the situation in Korea, he came without any hesitation to report on events in Gwangju. What was it that made him come all the way to Gwangju? And the ordinary taxi driver who happened to drive him there, what might he have gone through? I wanted to depict a past era as reflected in the eyes of a taxi driver who starts to feel a change taking place within himself.”
