TRIPOLI CANCELLED

TRIPOLI CANCELLED
by Naeem Mohaiemen
Country: Greece, Germany, UK
Year: 2017
Duration: 95'

A solitary man follows a set and unchangeable routine: he walks, he smokes, he writes letters to his wife, he stages unexplainable entr’actes, he daydreams of flying an old Jumbo jet, he carefully reads and rereads an old copy of the children’s novel Watership Down by Richard Adams. The setting of this oppressive daily routine, which borders on the surreal, is the abandoned airport of Hellinikon, in Greece. It is inhabited by this mysterious man and a few manikins wearing Olympic Airlines uniforms, his only company. But what is blocking this man in what is, to all effects, an inhospitable non-place? Is it a voluntary exile, an experiment in human isolation, or are there reasons beyond his control? In the end, the condition in which he finds himself is not very different from that of the migrants who, deprived of their future, live in a limbo whose end is never close by…
