Ten schools in Turin recount the educational activities they conducted between late 2016 and early 2017 with the support of the “Widespread” Museum of the Resistance in Turin and involving Gunter Demnig’s installation, the “Stumbling Stones.”

Alessandro Bronzini
Alessandro Bronzini (La Spezia, Italty, 1964) lives and works in Turin and is specialized in making institutional films. For the cultural association Eliogabalo, to which he belongs, he designed and made numerous audiovisual laboratories for schools. He began his activity as a documentary filmmaker in 2003, with Elementi di identità urbana (2011); Kanimambo, União Geral, about Maputo’s Union of Agricultural Cooperatives in Mozambique; and La Spezia, Porta di Sion (2016), about the vicissitudes of the Shoah survivors who embarked in May 1946 to clandestinely reach Palestine. At present, he is making a documentary about the stage director Robert Lepage.

“In Turin, I happened to note groups of school children gathered around entranceways, as though they were taking part in a rite. After they went away, what remained on the ground was a bronze stone surrounded by fresh cement, set in the shadow of the broad-brimmed hat of the artist Gunter Demnig. A small, indelible tribute to the people who crossed that threshold one last time before disappearing into the Nazi-Fascist death machine. We wanted to recount the students’ encounter with these traces of life, the pathway to explore them, to really know them, to recount them. And the emotion of the families of the deportees, who brought their loved ones back home. Thanks to a stone with a name engraved in it.”
