WHAT HAPPENED TO MONDAY

WHAT HAPPENED TO MONDAY
by Tommy Wirkola
Country: UK, France, Belgium, USA
Year: 2017
Duration: 123'

The out-of-control birth rate has forced governments to enact the drastic One-Child-Policy instituted by the Child Allocation Bureau, which is directed by Dr. Cayman, who has decreed that all children in excess must be hibernated. A woman dies giving birth to seven twin girls and, to save them all, their grandfather hides them and names them Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Each one of them may leave the house only on the day that corresponds to their name; they use the shared identity of Karen Settman and are forbidden from revealing their family secret. Hidden for six days a week, the seven sisters are only free to be themselves in the prison of the apartment in which they live. Everything goes smoothly until one day Monday doesn’t return home…

Biography

film director

Tommy Wirkola

Tommy Wirkola (Alta, Norway, 1979) debuted as a director and screenwriter with Kill Buljo - The Movie (2007), a low-budget parody of Kill Bill which was a surprise success. It provided him and his co-producers with the money to make the Nazi-zombie film Dead Snow, which was presented at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, became a horror cult and received four nominations at the Scream Awards. With Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, produced by Paramount Pictures, he reaped another extraordinary box office success. He later returned to his roots, co-writing and directing Dead Snow: Red Vs Dead, presented at Sundance in 2014. At present, he is writing the screenplay of a new project, Irredeemable, which will be directed by Adam McKay.

Declaration

film director

“We worked hard on the seven main characters to make them real. Differentiating seven guys would have been more difficult. I wanted to be sure that the audience could tell one twin from another.”
