ATTO DI FEDE

LEAP OF FAITH
by Vittorio Antonacci
Country: Italy
Year: 2018
Duration: 58'

A band travels by bus to the next town festival. Vituccia picks petals off of roses, puts the petals in the freezer, and sits down to wait for the Madonna. Raffaele does battle against pedestrians and cars to defend his San Rocco, and against time to preserve the popular significance of religious feast days. Peeking behind the curtains of patron saints’ festivals, the mystery of the sacred crumbles in the feverish and joyous preparations of the townspeople, in the silences and chit-chat which fill the time as they wait for God, the Madonna, and the saints.

Declaration

film director

"Atto di fede is […] a multiform portrait of popular religiousness […]. At the end of our itinerant journey following the band members and street artists – and after being adopted into the family at various villages during the filming – we came to the conclusion that religious feast days are a pure celebration of humanity. They are more useful to people than to the Almighty, to strengthen social ties and guarantee the survival of the community of which they are a part, thanks to a shared and joyous suspension of normality.”
