DOVLATOV

DOVLATOV
by Aleksey German
Country: Russia
Year: 2018
Duration: 126'

German recounts six days in the life of the brilliant and ironical author Sergei Dovlatov, who stands out for his ability to see well beyond the strict limits of Soviet Russia during the 1970s. Along with his friend, the poet Joseph Brodsky, Dovlatov fought to preserve his talent and integrity in a cultural and social context in which his friends and artist colleagues were crushed by the indestructible will of the State-run machine. A context which both he and Brodsky would soon leave behind to flee to America, losing everything they possessed in the process.

Declaration

film director

“I began reading the works of Dovlatov very late, when I was about twenty-six or twenty-seven years old, but from that moment on, I read them one after another, completely submerging myself in the author. Already back then I began to think about making a movie about him but, for roughly fifteen years, I continued to wonder how to make it: Dovlatov is without a doubt one of the symbols of the last twenty-five years of the 20th century.”
