HOMO BOTANICUS

HOMO BOTANICUS
by Guillermo Quintero
Country: Colombia, France
Year: 2018
Duration: 88'

Fifteen years after abandoning his studies as a botanist, Quintero visits his old professor Julio Betancur. With him and his new disciple, Cristian Castro, he returns to the Colombian tropical forests. During this expedition we understand the importance of legacy between master and pupil, as we immerse in doubts over science thanks to the reflection on the obsessions of the modern man to control and map Nature. In the diverse and nearly infinite world of the tropics, what is the point of collecting plants forever?

Declaration

film director

“I constructed a film around the relationship between my old professor and his new disciple, from a more thoughtful and distanced view – my own. I realize now that this portrait of these two men could well have sprung from some engraving of German naturalists of the 19th century. Who would imagine that such a love for the classification and collection of plants could still exist today? This story brings us also to the understanding of the beauty of our natural resources, the greatness of the tropics, the extent of its forms and the history of the natural world.”
