I NOMI DEL SIGNOR SULCIC
by Elisabetta Sgarbi
Country: Italy
Year: 2018
Duration: 80'

Irena Ruppel discovers shocking things about her life when she and her friend Ivana visit a remote valley in the Po river delta. And it seems she knows a lot of things about Gabriele, a man who lives in the valley. He welcomes them and, in turn, becomes curious and is baffled by this charming Slovenian woman who doesn’t appear to speak Italian but seems to understand everything that is going on. A  journey through personal and collective memories, with Nazi spies, fascists, Tito’s militia, true and false identities, fathers and children, real or presumed.

Declaration

film director

“The movie ends with the line ‘Take away my memory and I’ll never be old.’ It is a verse by a poet from Ferrara, one of my father’s favorites, and I wanted it in the film. Because this is a movie about memory, about the past which resurfaces, about ghosts – only slightly immaterial – which surprise the present of a man who, unaware, lives his normal life. But it is also a movie which celebrates the audacity of living, of being able to say no to the accumulations of the past and of history. Sometimes, a liberating gesture is a gesture of liberty.”
