Piedmont, a mountain valley on the border with France. On an autumn night, the corpse of a man shot dead with two rifle shots emerges from the waters of a torrent. To find it is Cesare, called “the Frenchman,” a passeur who for years has left his job and lives with his dog closed in the silence and loneliness of a cabin. The death of the young Fausto will force him to leave his isolation to confront the painful truth behind the crime.

Nicola Bellucci
Nicola Bellucci (Arezzo, Italy, 1963) studies philosophy at the University of Florence. In 1988 he graduated in directing at the Institute of Film Sciences of the same city. In 1996 he moved to Switzerland. He works as editor and director of photography. In 2010 he shot the documentary Nel giardino dei suoni, which won numerous international awards and prizes. Grozny Blues, his second feature film, shot in Chechnya over the course of three years, is shown in the most important international festivals and is chosen among the fifteen best documentaries of 2015 by the EFA. The Stone Eater is his first fiction feature film.

“It was the strong feelings aroused in me by reading the novel by Davide Longo to convince me of wanting to realize The Stone Eater. In the history of the “eater” the opaque aspects of things are revealed, the duplicity of human action that fascinates and frightens me, and that for some time I wanted “cinematographically” to narrate, venturing into a fascinating and dangerous territory, that between a training novel and genre film. The border, a medium, undetermined and ambiguous territory: a real, conventional or cultural line, which always separates what is other than itself is the symbolic place par excellence of this film.”
