IN FABRIC
by Peter Strickland
Country: UK
Year: 2018
Duration: 118'

When Sheila is sold a strikingly beautiful red dress at a Thames Valley department store during the January sales, it looks like the lonely divorcee has had a rare piece of good luck. The salesperson delivers a florid, confusing yet effective sales pitch full of mystery and seductive promise. Sheila’s confidence is boosted by the garment, the fabric of which seems to adapt to fit whoever wears it. Meanwhile the department store staff perform arcane rituals during closing hours and the red, cursed dress passes from person to person with devastating consequences.

Declaration

film director

“I’m interested in objects and the almost alchemical power they have in cinema. The power of association with an object and how that can haunt us is really what I’m trying to throw open as a subject. How seeing an item of clothing from a deceased loved one alters your blood pressure. There’s also the element of transformation when wearing something. A shirt, depending on things like who’s wearing it or who owned it, can provoke all sorts of reactions, from arousal to disgust.”
