LES GRANDS SQUELETTES

SILENT STREAMS
by Philippe Ramos
Country: France
Year: 2018
Duration: 70'

Biography

film director

Philippe Ramos

Philippe Ramos (Drôme, France, 1966) became interested in cinema at a young age, while studying art history in Grenoble, when he discovered Super8 movie cameras and shot a dozen amateur short films. He came to the attention of the Cinémathèque de Grenoble, and later moved to Paris to continue working as a filmmaker. After meeting the producer Florence Borelly of Sésame Films, he made his first “professional” shorts, including Vers le silence (1995) and Ici-bas (1996). In 1999, he debuted in feature films with L’arche de Noé, followed in 2002 by Adieu pays; in 2007 by Capitaine Achab (2007), freely adapted from Moby Dick (preceded in 2004 by a short film of the same title); and in 2011 by Jeanne Captive, a transposition of the life of Joan of Arc which participated in the competition Filmmakers of the Present in Locarno. In 2016, he directed Fou d’amour.

Declaration

film director

“I wanted to construct a constellation of thoughts, a series of interior monologues. This almost political approach aims to undermine the position of the hero or the main character (inevitable figures in any movie) and instead give voice to everyone in a democratic way: women, men, young people, old people, homosexuals, heterosexuals… It doesn’t matter who they are: in my eyes they are simply human beings and I want to listen to their intimacy. This intimate dimension pays tribute to them and highlights their fragility, because, to use an up-to-date term, it really is a zone to defend against a devastating economic and social system which has, to a large degree, already made us its victims. […] It was hard to do because I had to exploit the intimate thoughts of people every day, discover their anxieties, doubts, complicated love stories…”
