MARCHE OU CRÈVE

HEAD ABOVE WATER
by Margaux Bonhomme
Country: France
Year: 2018
Duration: 83'

Elisa is an enthusiastic and hotheaded teenager who’s hoping to enjoy her last summer at home in Vercors, in South-West France, before moving away and striking out on her own. But the one to move out ends up being her mother, leaving Elisa and her father to take care of Elisa’s older sister, Manon, who has mental and physical disabilities. The ever-increasing weight of this burden pushes Elisa from love to hate and to the verge of losing herself and ground.

Biography

film director

Margaux Bonhomme

Margaux Bonhomme (Paris, 1974), starting at a young age, worked as a photographer, collaborating with agencies such as Magnum and Rapho, after which she honed her technique at the London Film School. She returned to Paris after receiving her degree, in 1998, and began her career as a director in cinema and advertising, all the while exhibiting her photographs in Paris and Arles. In 2009, she made her first short film, Un certain dimanche, which received the Audience Award at the Festival of Pontault-Combault, as did another short film of hers, La voix du Kate Moss, which was awarded in 2012 at Montpellier. In 2011, she dealt for the first time with the topic of disabilities in her documentary short Bel Canto, the start of a reflection which became central in Marche ou crève, her first feature film.

Declaration

film director

“There’s a large autobiographical dimension to this project, but I think that what the characters are going through resonates on a universal level. Manon’s disability puts stress on the characters’ relationships with each another and raises questions on a larger level, about the importance of these relationships, about guilt, jealousy, and separation. We can’t stop ourselves from loving our siblings, but at what price? This is the question Elisa confronts in the film.”
