MATHIEU AMALRIC, L'ART ET LA MATIÈRE
by Quentin Mével, André S. Labarthe
On the set, while shooting, and during various conversations, Mathieu Amalric prepares Barbara, his very personal biography of the famous singer from the 1960s, portrayed by Jeanne Balibar. Chatting with André S. Labarthe and Quentin Mével, the French actor/director remembers the previous films he directed and hints at another Barbara (Hannigan, the opera singer), the only one who is familiar with the ghosts which obsess the orchestra director Vladimir Jurowski. An episode of Cinéma, de notre temps, the last one directed by Labarthe (who created the series with Janine Bazin), who passed away in March 2018.

Declaration
film director
“The project, from first will to the film direction, has taken place in a brief and intense time, in a joint spirit of capturing a film shooting at the heart of its life, and a life at the heart of the shooting sessions. Mathieu capsizes the real world, and the fiction part of the movement is both fostered and improvised, what makes him a sort of John Zorn of the cinema, a cinema connected to life’s rhythm.” (Q. Mével)
