RIDE

RIDE
by Valerio Mastandrea
Country: Italy
Year: 2018
Duration: 90'

A Sunday in May, people are counting down the hours at Carolina’s house. The next day they will have to publicly take part in the collective emotionalism which has overwhelmed a small seaside town:  Mauro Secondari, a young factory worker, fell and died on the job. And ever since this happened, his companion Carolina is on her own, with a ten-year-old son, and she finds it almost impossible to despair over having lost the love of her life. Why is she unable to cry? Why isn’t she going crazy with pain? The funeral is the next day and everybody is expecting to see a young, distraught widow. Carolina cannot and must not disappoint anyone, above all herself.

Declaration

film director

“I want and need to feel bad. It’s my right.” When people say things like this, you can be sure they are in difficulty. Not because their desire is associated with feeling bad but because they are declaring their right to pain, and therefore, to a pain which someone or something is denying them. In this era of ours - in particular, these past thirty years – we can see and hear everything; this exponentially amplifies our perception of the world and, at the same time, it weakens our emotional reaction to everything we encounter. This regards the nice things but also the things which make us suffer. During these years characterized by a constant search for happiness, we must also ask for permission to feel suitably bad. If you think about it, it’s logical. Only by living inside darkness can we let ourselves be blinded by a love for life.
