TYREL

TYREL
by Sebastián Silva
Country: USA
Year: 2018
Duration: 86'

Tyler joins his friend on a trip to the Catskill Mountains for a weekend birthday party with several people he doesn’t know. As soon as they get there, it’s clear that he’s the only black guy, and it’s going to be a weekend of heavy drinking. Although Tyler is welcomed, he can’t help but feel uneasy around a close-knit group of white guys. The combination of all the testosterone and alcohol starts to get out of hand, and Tyler’s precarious situation starts to feel like a nightmare.

Biography

film director

Sebastián Silva

Sebastián Silva (Santiago, Chile, 1979), after studying film in Chile, moved to Canada to specialize in animation. After a few exhibitions he moved to Hollywood for a short, fruitless period, during which he also played in a few rock bands. In 2007, he debuted in feature length films with La vida me mata, produced – like the rest of his filmography – by the company Fabula, owned by the brothers Juan de Dios and Pablo Larraín. It was followed by other movies, including The Maid (2009), Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and in competition at the Torino Film Festival; and the diptych Crystal Fairy & the Magical Cactus (2013) and Magic Magic (2013), both starring Michael Cera. With the first film he won the Directing Award at Sundance, while the second, which also stars Juno Temple, participated at the Quinzaine des réalisateurs at Cannes.

FILMOGRAFIA

Declaration

film director

“There’s a lot of layers. […] Tyler’s not going to be a saint and he’s not going to be a victim. I don’t want to have clear victims or clear victimizers. I don’t want to have the bad guy and the good guy. I don’t want a conversation about taking sides. I want to make people think about what they witness. This movie will live in every American’s own set of prejudices and opinions. I want people to be somehow troubled by the conclusions they come to on their own.”
