UNAS PREGUNTAS

ONE OR TWO QUESTIONS
by Kristina Konrad
Country: Germany, Uruguay
Year: 2018
Duration: 237'

In 1986, the Uruguayan Parliament passed a law granting amnesty for all crimes committed by the military and police during the dictatorship (1973-85). This law prevented the clarification demanded by the relatives of those who had disappeared and been murdered by the former regime. A public initiative arose calling for a referendum. Using U-matic footage, mostly of interviews recorded on the streets between 1987 and 1989, the film present a reflection of a country in which the values such as peace, justice, and equality are continually questioned and re-explored.

Declaration

film director

“There was a great willingness to talk to us. Two women weren’t taken all that seriously, but were also less intimidating. An openness that no longer exists today. You can no longer simply walk around in public areas and approach strangers with the camera and ask them something, not even in Uruguay anymore. However, now and then the anxiety to speak openly to the camera did arise. The military, after all, was publicly threatening, even on television: ‘If Green wins, then we don’t know what we will do.’”
