A circus and its attractions: besides exotic animals, charming trapeze artists, and vigorous strongmen, there are dwarfs, Siamese twins, microcephalics, hermaphrodites, legless men, and armless girls. The dynamic, intelligent, very tender, and very unkind “freaks” recounted by Tod Browning, whose parents were deaf and dumb and who was a circus entertainer before becoming a director and maestro of “diversity.” An evil masterpiece, in which Beauty doesn’t correspond to Good. At the time it was a shock, then it became a cult.
