Corto Vaclav
Corto Vaclav, anthropologist trained in Nanterre, discovered the work of Jean Rouch and developed a passion for Africa. He worked for two years at the Ethnographic Film Committee, where he establish many relationships within this world of explorer-filmmakers. There he met Hadrien La Vapeur, who was looking for a sound recorder to shoot in Congo. Very quickly, the journey is transformed into an initiatory and protean exploration.

Hadrien La Vapeur, assistant to Philippe Garrel for ten years, he shot Super8 experimental films. Fascinated by the trance and the spirit world, he meets Corto Vaclav, anthropologist. They both go to Congo to shoot documentaries in direct cinema. They founded the label Expédition Invisible.

“In Africa, no sphere of society escapes enchantment and magic. [...] To penetrate this strange universe, it was essential for us to work in pairs, not only to deepen our understanding of this society but also not to lose ground in the irrational. For behind the omnipresence of the marvellous lies a more disturbing aspect: that of witchcraft. This delicate subject has become the starting point of our film; to approach it, we decided to place ourselves on the side of the ngunzas, a brotherhood of traditional healers in Brazzaville, in charge of fighting bad spells. Thus, we met the apostle Medard who, opening his temple to our camera, became the main character of Kongo.”
