Based on stories gathered and formed among the people who live in the region, Säsong turns the setting into the film’s node and main character. But like shadows over the landscape, some protagonists are distinguished: Beata, a seasonal worker who comes to Sweden for the first time, Aaron, a young man with a broken heart returning to the place where he grew up, and Billie, a girl lost in her first summer vacation. As the film follows their lives, which slowly merge with the landscape, a map is drawn of the confusion between machines, people and animals. It becomes clear how they all depend on each other, in this era where the future is obscured by man’s violent imprint on the planet.

John Skoog
John Skoog (1985) studied art in Frankfurt but ever since his adolescence he has been interested in experimental film, photography and video installations. His works have been exhibited at the MoMA in New York, the Museum of Plastic Arts in Cali and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Tirana, among others, and have also been presented at important events, including the New York Underground Film Festival. Late on Earth is his debut as a film director.

“What we tried to do was create a film told in ellipses. But long before there was a script, we talked about: what does a film that is more like a topography feel like? Or like a map, a landscape. Not landscape as in scenery or ‘beautiful’ backdrop. More as in that you as a viewer are standing in the topography, and the scenes from the film are places you can move between.”
