Hitchcock’s only horror movie, inspired by a short story by Daphne du Maurier and the invasion of sea birds at Santa Cruz, California, just like at Bodega Bay (the movie’s location). Around Tippi Hedren, Hitch weaves a web of attraction, jealousy, and Oedipus complexes, rendered explosive by the inexplicable aggression of the murderous birds. Not just crows: all of them, even sparrows. Growing tension, a spectacular, climatic attack on the diner, the school, the phone booth, an enigmatic finale. A flight into fear.
