Based on the short story The Body Snatcher by Stevenson (who was inspired by the story of Burke and Hare, murderers and dealers in corpses in Edinburgh in the early 1800s), the sinister drama of Dr. MacFarlane, a surgeon and professor of anatomy, and his ambiguous relationship with the coachman John Gray, who steals corpses. Boris Karloff (Gray) in one of the best roles of his career, no longer a monster but a loquacious, astute, lower-class Scot with a black soul.
