Young Gilbert lives in Endora, a very provincial town in Texas; his family situation is not the happiest. His mother became depressed after her husband committed suicide and has become a recluse; she lives on the couch and has obesity problems. Gilbert's brother Arnie, who is almost eighteen years old, is autistic. Life in the small town is fairly monotonous, until Becky and her grandmother arrive and are stuck in town because their camper has broken down.
Lasse Hallström (Stockholm, Sweden, 1946) grew up in an upper-middle class Swedish family and began making films in the early 1970s, working for television and making music videos for ABBA. He gained worldwide success first with ABBA: The Movie (1977), then with My Life as a Dog (1985), for which he received two Oscar nominations. In 1991, he moved to the United States, where he made a name for himself with What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), followed by Something to Talk About (1995), The Cider House Rules (1999), and Chocolat (2000). His most recent movies include The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014), A Dog’s Purpose (2017), and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018).

“When I made the movie, I remember thinking that Leonardo DiCaprio would become a star: and I was right. I truly thought he was a great actor and was good in every role he played. I think making Titanic must have been a terrible experience for him but now things are back to normal.”
