GIOVANNA – STORIE DI UNA VOCE

GIOVANNA – STORIE DI UNA VOCE
by Chiara Ronchini
Country: Italy
Year: 2021
Duration: 90

Giovanna Marini has recounted history and her stories in music. Since 1958, she has been compos- ing, gathering, and interpreting songs of oral tradition, weaving a “different” chronicle of Italy, made of voices, people, pathways that don’t belong to those of the great and famous. She is a surprising voice, an incredible woman, beyond every framework and school. Starting with her artistic pathway, the film weaves an anthropo- logical and social story of Italy, with archival and contemporary images, reconstructing a memory that sees in the folds of the past a world of possibilities for the future.

Biography

film director

Chiara Ronchini

(Marino, Rome, 1976) began as a film editor but over the years, following her passions and her intuition, she primarily turned her hand to directing. Her research on archival material is a consideration of the re-signification of audiovisual material, to reflect in turn on contemporary times in a political, cultural, and anthropological key. Her writing through images is always guided by a feminist gaze, careful to capture the complexity of the stories she composes and recounts. Her most recent works as a film editor and director include Nessuno ci può giudicare (2017) and Bulli e pupe - Una storia sentimentale degli anni ’50 (2018), both of which she made with Steve Della Casa. Nessuno ci può giudicare also won a Silver Ribbon.

FILMOGRAFIA

Nessuno ci può giudicare (co-regia Steve Della Casa, doc., 2016), Bulli e pupe (co-regia Steve Della Casa, doc., 2018), Giovanna, storie di una voce (doc, 2021).

Declaration

film director

“Giovanna Marini is a complex figure who cannot be simplified. A musician, performer, composer, and teacher, she is a unique figure in the musical field. There is something in the particular way she uses her voice, her posture, the timber of her voice, the rhythmic structure she uses, that makes a clean break with the pre-established system, with the church, the state, the economy, offering her listeners a 'different' vision, less sure, less simple, 'ineffable,' to use one of her words. Working with archival images, I became enthralled with the re-signification and reuse of historical sources. The visual material is the guardian of something that is culturally and sociologically alive; it is an instrument for a circular rereading of the past, of ruins, of our country's subordinate cultures. Far from being dead or past, these cultures conserve possibilities of redemption for our time, between the present and the future.”
