Ten students from a film school find themselves locked up at home a few weeks after classes began. Outside, COVID-19 is turning the whole world upside-down. As they wait for the emergency to end, the young people reflect on what it means to recount and film, as they follow time suspended between private emotions and major collective changes.

The directors Marta Basso, Giuliana Crociata, Matteo Di Giandomenico, Mario Alberto Estrada Sanchez, Naomi Kikuchi, Alice Malingri di Bagnolo, Mariafrancesca Monsù Scolaro, Gianfranco Piazza, Tito Puglielli, and Calogero Venza come from different courses. At the moment, they are studying documentary film at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Palermo. Each one of them has made short films and documentaries. Sotto lo stesso tempo (2021) is the movie of the first year studies at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia and it was entirely made during the pandemic.

“Over the months, the suspended time during the lockdown at home became our ‘interesting’ time. It gave us a shared objective, to try to recount ourselves in a daily life made of little or nothing, as we tried to dialogue with History, with which each one of us felt part, for the first time. Then, all of a sudden, the need to go beyond ourselves, in search of other stories, other people, other movies to imagine, in order to free ourselves from this movie in which we had imprisoned ourselves.”
