Year: 1954

Biography

film director

Richard Carlson

(Albert Lea, Minnesota, USA, 1912 - Encino, Los Angeles, USA, 1977) starred on Broadway during the 1930s and made his debut as a big screen actor in the comedy The Young in Heart (Richard Wallace, 1938). In Hollywood he becomes a versatile actor, able to adapt to comedy (The Ghost Breakers, George Marshall, 1940), the adventure film (The Howards of Virginia, Frank Lloyd, 1940), melodramas (Little Foxes, William Wyler, 1941) and musical (Presenting Lily Mars, Norman Taurog, 1943). Volunteer for the WWII, on his return he struggles to resume his career and has to wait for the affirmation of science fiction and series B horror in the 50s to find success, thanks to roles such as It Came from Outer Space (1953) and Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), both directed by Jack Arnold. The decision to switch to directing also dates from this period, with films such as Riders to the Stars (1954) and the western Four Guns to the Border (1954). From the second half of the 1950s he also worked as a TV actor and director, in Mackenzie’s Raiders (1958-59), Wagon Train (1963-64), The Fugitive (1964), The Virginian (1964-65), Rawhide (1965), Perry Mason (1964-66) and Bonanza (1968).
