I PIONIERI

I PIONIERI
by Luca Scivoletto
Country: Italy
Year: 2022
Duration: 86

Sicily, the summer of 1990. Enrico is twelve years old; he has lived his life under the sign of the Italian Communist Party since his father is a local director and his mother a fervent follower. Enrico doesn't have any friends, except for Renato, who is also the son of communists, and he spends his days accompanying his father from one local chapter to the next. Tired of their summers, which are so different from those of their peers, Enrico and Renato make a decision: they'll go to a campground on their own. But not to any campground: the two re-found the Pionieri, the former communist scouts, which went defunct decades earlier. During their escape, they are joined by Victor, a rough classmate who has been flunked several times, and Margherita, the daughter of an American serviceman at the nearby NATO base. Together, they create an improbable and quarrelsome quartet that is united by a need to run away from everything.

Declaration

film director

“My starting point was the realization that, in the Italy of my childhood, which was still divided between the American military bases and the biggest Communist Party in the west, politics had a much stronger impart on family ties compared to today, almost like soccer, sometimes exaggerated and therefore potentially comical. And I started from a personal difficulty: I was the son of communist parents but I was born and brought up at the wrong moment in time, the dazzling 1980s, when communism was undergoing a crisis and, year after year, all the ideals I had absorbed as a child were become less and less applicable. The result was a precocious and unresolved political bewilderment. But the autobiographical side stops there. Because, right from the start, my goal was to recount a universal story: the symbiotic friendship between two boys and the way it enters into crisis when one of them bursts the bubble of certainties that had protected them ever since their childhood.”
