THE TERROR OF TINY TOWN

THE TERROR OF TINY TOWN
by Sam Newfield
Country: USA
Year: 1938
Duration: 62

Tiny Town is a peaceful village until bad guy Bat Haines tries to stir up some ranch wars. He hopes the feuding families will kill each other, thus leaving their land free for him to claim. Buck Lawson, the good guy in white, catches on to Bat’s nefarious schemes and after exposing Bat to the townspeople, he meets up with his foe. Bat retreats to a log cabin where Buck puts a final stop to the outlaw’s plans by blowing up the cabin with a stick of dynamite. A musical and B-western movie, with a cast comprised entirely of midgets. Producer Jed Buell, who produced the first all-black Western, Harlem on the Prairie (1937, also directed by Newfield), wanted to create another novelty film that would capture the public’s attention.

Biography

film director

Sam Newfield

(New York, Usa, 1899 – Los Angeles, Usa, 1964) (aged 64), also known as Sherman Scott or Peter Stewart, was an American B-movie director, one of the most prolific in American film history. He is credited with directing over 250 feature films in a career which began during the silent era. In addition to his staggering feature output, he also directed one-and two-reel comedy shorts, training films, industrial films, TV episodes. Because of this massive output – he would sometimes direct more than 20 films in a single year – he has been called the most prolific director of the sound era. Many of Newfield’s films were made for PRC Pictures (Producers Releasing Corporation), the smallest and least prestigious of the Hollywood film studios of the 1940s, headed by his brother Sigmund Neufeld. The films PRC produced were low-budget productions, the majority being westerns, with an occasional horror film or crime drama. Sam Newfield was credited as Sherman Scott and Peter Stewart on a number of films he made for PRC, in order to hide the fact that one person was responsible for so many of PRC’s films.
