Declaration

film director

“We began in 2015. Riley was shooting American Honey at a motel in South Dakota when she met Bill Reddy and Franklin Sioux Bob, who had been cast as extras in the film. The scene was pushed six hours and as they waited a friendship was born. These two young men embodied a rare kind of magnetism. They had stories that were larger than life, and a charm that changed the temperature of every room they entered. Soon after, we decided to visit Frank and Bill in their hometown, Pine Ridge, a place so singular it feels impossible to stay away for long. And we didn’t. We returned to Pine Ridge regularly. Each time, we stayed a little longer and met more members of the community. We were falling in love with this indescribably special place, but more importantly, we were growing closer with Bill and Frank, and what began as a friendship soon evolved to be the most meaningful collaboration of our lives. A few trips in, the Frank and Bill started taking an interest in the work we do. We asked if they wanted to make a movie, they did, and that’s how this film began.”
