Dr. Friedrich Ritter and his wife, Dora Strauch, are two idealistic Europeans who flee Germany in 1929, renouncing the bourgeois values they believe are destroying humanity's true nature, to settle on the uninhabited island of Floreana in the Galápagos archipelago. However, their sought-after solitude is short-lived. They are soon joined by Margaret and Heinz Wittmer, serious and capable settlers, and later by Baroness Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrhorn, along with her two lovers, an Ecuadorian servant, and a plan to open a luxury hotel on the island. Bad weather, wild animals, and the complete lack of comfort and civilization make their coexistence challenging, but the greatest test will be enduring desperate neighbors willing to go to any lengths to assert themselves.

Ron Howard
(Usa) He made his name with the TV series Happy Days, for which he received a Golden Globe in 1978, and debuted as a director in 1977 with Grand Theft Auto (1977), the start of a career which would award him Academy Awards for Best Film and Best Director for A Beautiful Mind (2001) and two nominations for Frost/Nixon (2008). He has directed comedies, fantasies, sci-fi movies, historical dramas, action movies, and westerns. His critically acclaimed films also include: Splash (1984), Backdraft (1991), Apollo 13 (1995), Ransom (1996), The Missing (2003), and Rush (2013). Earlier this year, his latest documentary, Jim Henson Idea Man, won the EMMY Award for Outstanding Documentary. The film made its World Premiere at TIFF in September 2024.

“Starting out a while ago with Apollo 13, I’ve been gravitating toward these kinds of stories based on real events. Where characters are really pressure tested and it reveals a lot about them. I think one of the reasons people find this one a little surprising is that here, the characters are so layered and complex, that the choices they made that we play out in the film are intense and shocking. They’re utterly human. It is a lot of fun to follow the events as the conflict unfolds. It is a thriller, and part of that suspense is wondering who’s going to survive and why. This true story was so full of that. It is based on two wildly different accounts of the same unsolved mystery. As you delve into it, it certainly falls into that category of stranger than fiction.”
