The owner of the rights to the novel The Authentic Death of Hendry Jones by Charles Neider, Brando decides to personally direct the movie, after having passed on Sam Peckinpah and, above all, on Stanley Kubrick due to their strong artistic differences. After a bank heist in Mexico, the two bandits Rio (Brando) and Dad Longworth (Karl Malden) go on the lam but Longworth betrays his accomplice, leaving him in the hands of the authorities. Years later, after escaping from prison, Rio discovers that Longworth has become the sheriff of Monterey, California, and he decides to get his revenge. But his love for Louisa (Pina Pellicer), Longworth’s stepdaughter, complicates things… One of the most unusual westerns of the 1960s, already part of that process of revisionism which the genre underwent during that decade, and whose greatness is recognized today.
