The story of Giulio Basletti, a metal worker in Milan, a union member, and a big fan of the Milan soccer team. He gives up his bachelor’s life to marry Vincenzina, the young and beautiful daughter of a colleague of his, not to mention his goddaughter. Giulio is madly in love with Vincenzina; they have a child together but since he wants to make sure she is always at home, he oppresses her with his jealousy and his fear of betrayal. His miserable life falls to pieces when he and Vincenzina meet Giovanni, a young policeman who was wounded in a clash with some workers. After discovering the love story between the policeman and Vincenzina, Giulio, who is only open and modern in words, kicks his wife and son out of the house and tries to commit suicide. Years later, there might still be time for forgiveness.

Mario Monicelli
(Rome, 1915-2010) debuted as a director in 1934 with the short Cuore rivelatore and directed his first feature film, Pioggia d’estate, in 1937 as Michele Badiek. He co-wrote and directed numerous films with Steno, including Totò Looks for an Apartment. In 1958, he won a Nastro d’argento for Best Screenplay for Persons Unknown and the following year shared the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for The Great War. He has made over sixty films and has worked with Italy’s most famous actors and actresses, like Sordi, Totò, Mastroianni, Gassman, Tognazzi, Volonté, Loren, Vitti and Magnani.
