THE FUGITIVE KIND

PELLE DI SERPENTE
by Sidney Lumet
Country: USA
Year: 1960
Duration: 118'

Marlon Brando, unforgettably clad in snakeskin, is Val Xavier, a vagabond who decides to tread the straight and narrow and stops in a town in the South for a change of life. Torn between two women, the wealthy and wild Carol Cutrere (Joanne Woodward) and the frustrated and unhappily married Lady Torrence (Anna Magnani), he decides to start working in the latter woman’s store and ends up sparking the anger of the local inhabitants. Four Oscar-winning performances (Brando, Anna Magnani, Joanne Woodward, and Maureen Stapleton); a young and emerging director (Sidney Lumet); a screenplay by Tennessee Williams, who adapted his play “Orpheus Descending;” and cinematography by Boris Kaufman: the best of Hollywood cinema of its time, in a movie that is elevated, above all, by the duets between Brando and Magnani.

Biography

film director

Sidney Lumet

(Philadelphia, 1924-New York, 2011) was a director, producer, and screenwriter. After directing theatrical and television productions, he debuted in film with 12 Angry Men (1957), which marked the beginning of his collaboration with Henry Fonda and for which he won the Golden Bear in Berlin. One of the major American filmmakers of the 1960s and ‘70s, he directed movies with a clear theatrical and literary bent (Long Day’s Journey Into Night, 1962; Murder on the Orient Express, 1974), reflections on history and its drifts  (Fail-Safe, 1964), unflinching portraits of American society (The Hill, 1965), and then, in the 1970s, some of the most famous movies of that decade, from Serpico (1973) to Dog Day Afternoon (1975) and Network (1976), all the way to the gloomy noir Prince of the City (1981). He worked with actors such as Sean Connery, Al Pacino, Fay Dunaway, Albert Finney, William Holden, Paul Newman (in the famous The Verdict, 1982), Jane Fonda (The Morning After), and Melanie Griffith (Guilty as Sin). In 2005, he was awarded an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement.
