Miami. After a union leader disappears, the journalist Megan Carter, without realizing that she is being used by the police, leaks in an article that suspicion has fallen on Michael Gallagher, a liquor wholesaler whose father was a mobster. Megan is aggressively confronted by the man but even though she realizes that, despite his family relations, he is honest, she is unable to keep the story from ruining his life. It will be up to the Department of Justice to solve the case, in part thanks to a plan which lets Gallagher unmask his accusers. A warning against the risks of an overly powerful press (based on the case of a journalist who won a Pulitzer prize after unwittingly publishing false news), dominated by the rage and dignity of a great Paul Newman.

Sydney Pollack
(Lafayette, IN, Usa. 1934 – Pacific Palisades, CA, Usa, 2008) è tra i principali registi hollywoodiani emersi dagli anni ’60 in poi. In coppia con Robert Redford ha firmato alcuni dei film più noti degli anni ’70 (Corvo Rosso non avrai il mio scalpo, Come eravamo, I tre giorni del condor, Il cavaliere elettrico) e ha inoltre lavorato con interpreti del calibro di Robert Mitchum (Yakuza), Al Pacino (Un attimo, una vita), Paul Newman (Diritto di cronaca), Dustin Hoffman (Tootsie), Meryl Streep (La mia Africa), Tom Cruise (Il socio). Nel 1986 con La mia Africa ha vinto sette Oscar, tra cui quello per il miglior film e la migliore regia. Come interprete ha partecipato ai suoi stessi film (Tootsie) e lavorato con Woody Allen (Mariti e moglie) e Stanley Kubrick (Eyes Wide Shut).
