C'ERAVAMO TANTO AMATI

C'ERAVAMO TANTO AMATI
by Ettore Scola
Country: Italy
Year: 1974
Duration: 124'

Gianni, Antonio, Nicola: three partisans fighting the Nazi-fascists in the mountains. Three left wing men who dream of a new and fairer Italy during the first Republican season. Three friends who, over the following years, from the mid-1950s to the early ‘70s, take different, sometimes parallel paths; they lose sight of each other, betray each other, find each other once again… One in particular will abandon all the ideals for which he fought; the other two will, each in his own way, embody the betrayed hopes, the errors, and the illusions of Italy’s Left. And, naturally, all three of them will be in love with the same woman. Scola’s masterpiece, a look back at three decades of Italian history full of melancholy and dreams of redemption, but also a love letter to Italian cinema and its stars. The movie is dedicated to Vittorio De Sica, and Fellini and Mastroianni also took part… The four stars are unforgettable: Manfredi, Gassman, Satta Flores, and the beautiful Sandrelli.

Biography

film director

Ettore Scola

(Trevico, Avellino, Italy, 1931 - Rome, Italy, 2016), after collaborating with Age and Scarpelli on the screenplays of major movies, debuted as a director in 1964 with Let’s Talk About Women, starring Vittorio Gassman (one of his favorite actors), Nino Manfredi, and Marcello Mastroianni. Between the late 1960s and throughout the ’70s, he made a name for himself as one of the maestros of Italian cinema, as he continued making comedies, but also struck melancholy and dramatic notes with his masterpieces. In 2013, ten years after his last film, he directed the tribute to Fellini Che strano chiamarsi Federico. In 2012 he received the 30th TFF Gran Premio Torino.
