Sentenced to two years in prison for theft, Luke, who is solitary and cold, first sparks the hostility of Dragline, the leader of the prisoners, and then becomes his friend thanks to his talent at playing poker. When his mother dies, Luke, who is tired of prison life, escapes and is recaptured several times, each time surviving brutal violence. In the end, after losing the respect of the other inmates because he gave in to the prison guards, he escapes once more and shouts out all his rage at the law. One of the most famous prison movies ever made, with Rosenberg’s powerful directing and star turns by the entire cast, starting with Newman, of course, in one of his most famous roles.

Stuart Rosenberg
(New York, USA, 1927 – Beverly Hills, USA, 2007) is famous, above all, thanks to his collaborations with Paul Newman, who he directed in Cool Hand Luke, WUSA, Pocket Money (1972), and The Drowning Pool (1975). He was nominated five times for the Directors Guild of America Award and won a Primetime Emmy Award. His other movies include the horror film The Amityville Horror; the prison movie Brubaker, starring Robert Redford; and the noir The Pope of Greenwich Village, starring Mickey Rourke. He taught directing at the American Film Institute.
