The true story of writer Helen McDonald, who wrote the autobiographical novel of the same title. The film follows Helen who, after losing her beloved father, finds herself saved by an unlikely friendship with a stubborn hawk named Mabel. Through the bond, Helen rediscovers the beauty of being alive.

Philippa Lowthorpe
Yorkshire, United Kingdom, 1961) is a three-time BAFTA winner and the first female director ever to win a BAFTA for directing TV fiction. She directed the critically acclaimed and multi-award-winning mini-series Three Girls, which won five BAFTA Awards including Best Mini-Series and Lowthorpe’s second BAFTA for directing in 2019. She directed Claire Foy in The Crown season two and The Third Day: Winter for HBO/Plan B, starring Naomie Harris and Jude Law. Her recent work includes the feature film Misbehaviour for Pathé/BFI/BBC Films, starring Keira Knightley, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Jessie Buckley. Set in 1970, it tells the true story of the first Black woman to win Miss World and the young feminists who disrupted the event. She was the lead director of the first series and feature-length special of the international hit Call the Midwife, for which she won her first directing BAFTA in 2013. She began her career as a documentary filmmaker: one of her early films, Three Salons at the Seaside, was recently selected by the Grierson Trust as one of the “50 Must See Documentaries of the Last 50 Years”.
