Recommended by an old lawyer friend, the private eye Lew Harper, who is about to divorce his wife, agrees to investigate the disappearance of a millionaire. This leads him into a world of disillusion and corruption, with frustrated wives, spoiled heiresses, charming and louche airplane pilots, down-at-the-heels former stars, and drug addicted singers. And he discovers that all of them, in their own way, are guilty. Based on the novel The Moving Target by Ross Macdonald, a 1960s noir that deals with the typical Hollywood theme of the family crisis and moral crisis in American society. Newman’s character as the detective returns in The Drowning Pool.
