In a town in the south of the United States, Joan Huang, a girl of Chinese-American origin, lives with the daily racism of society; people make fun of her clothes and the food she eats. After becoming an adolescent, Joan dreams of becoming the queen of the school prom, leading her to disregard the requests of her family (who would like her to take over her father’s cleaning job) and to betray her own identity. Duped by her rival Olivia, Joan undergoes an experimental surgical procedure to seem white, in hopes of being accepted by her companions. The treatment will let her integrate with the others but she will lose her best friend Brindha and have to come to terms with an irreversible transformation…
