Chance Wayne, the gigolo of a fading actress, Alessandra del Lago, returns to his hometown after failing in his dream of becoming an actor in New York. He hopes to marry the daughter of a local mobster but he comes up against her father’s hostility and her brother’s thirst for revenge for something that happened years before… After Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, Richard Brooks and Paul Newman team up once again in a Tennessee Williams adaptation: another melodrama full of sensuality and decadence, frustration and feelings of defeat in a South fettered by legacies of kinship and guilt passed down through the generations. Extraordinary performances by the cast, in particular Geraldine Page, who had already appeared alongside Newman in the theatrical version directed by Elia Kazan.

Richard Brooks
(Philadelphia, USA, 1912 – Studio City, USA, 1992), born Ruben Sax, of Russian and Jewish origin, was an American director, screenwriter, author, and film producer. Like many directors of his generation who worked during the final phase of the classic Hollywood parabola, he tried his hand at many genres. Thanks to melodramas (The Last Time I Say Paris, Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, Sweet Bird of Youth), social dramas (Blackboard Jungle, The Catered Affair), famous literary adaptations (In Cold Blood, The Brothers Karamazov), flashes of New Hollywood such as Looking for Mr. Goodbar, and collaborations with famous authors (Gore Vidal, Tennessee Williams, Paddy Chayefsky), he became one of the most prestigious and reliable exponents of cinema of his time.
