THE HUDSUCKER PROXY

MISTER HULA HOOP
by Joel Coen, Ethan Coen
Country: USA
Year: 1994
Duration: 111'

The fictitious rise, actual fall, and triumph of young, dumb Norville Barnes, who came to Manhattan in 1958 with an ingenious discovery in his pocket: a sheet of paper with the drawing of a circle and a straight line. What is it? The hula hoop, of course, which, after being turned into a plastic circle to swirl around one’s waist, takes America by storm. Norville, who is manipulated behind his back by cynical Sidney J. Mussburger (a Mephistophelian Newman), a partner in the big company Hadsucker, climbs to the height of success but also sparks the suspicions of the unstoppable journalist Amy Archer… The first real Hollywood movie by the Coens, a tribute to screwball comedies and to Capra, Hawks, and Sturges, as well as to Metropolis, Citizen Kane, Powell, and Pressburger. A crazy, brilliant and comically conceptual film.

Biography

film director

Joel e Ethan Coen

(Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, 1954, 1957), for almost forty years have represented one of the most significant artistic partnerships in the history of American cinema. Together and singly, they have created, written, produced, directed, and edited their movies and have often supervised the music, as well. Sometimes, but only for convenience’s sake, they have divided the roles, with Joel overseeing the direction and Ethan the production, all the while both remaining responsible for the movie’s final outcome. Highly regarded at home and, above all, in Europe (Palme d’Or at Cannes for Barton Fink and Grand Prize of the Jury, always at Cannes, for Inside Llewyn Davis), they have won four Oscars: in 1997 for the screenplay of Fargo and in 2008, with No Country for Old Men, for Best Motion Picture, Best Achievement in Directing, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Their collaboration came to an end in 2018 with The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, but they have promised to start working together once again.
