THE LEFT HANDED GUN

FURIA SELVAGGIA
by Arthur Penn
Country: USA
Year: 1958
Duration: 102'

Followed by his fame as a criminal, Billy the Kid takes refuge in Mexico, where he is taken in by a blacksmith and his wife after he arrives on their doorstep, exhausted after one of his raids. When the man is killed, Billy decides to get his revenge on the man’s murderers, going against the advice of one of his few friends, the mature Pat Garrett. Out on a limb, the young man turns violent and will ultimately have to face down Garrett, who in the meantime has become the sheriff. The directing debut of Arthur Penn, based on a teleplay written by Gore Vidal that updates to the 1960s one of the most legendary events of the Old West. An extraordinary performance by Newman, in full Actor’s Studio mode, fragile and lost as the rebel without a cause.

Biography

film director

Arthur Penn

Arthur Penn (Pittsburg, PA, USA, 1922 - New York City, USA, 2010) was one of New Hollywood’s favorite directors. His movies have always carefully described and criticized American society. His most successful films include the drama The Miracle Worker (1962), which received two Oscars; the schizophrenic Mickey One (1965), influenced by Europe’s nouvelle vague; the gangster movie Bonnie & Clyde (1967), which also won two Oscars; the crepuscular western Little Big Man (1970); the disenchanted noir Night Moves (1975); another western, only more crude and desperate, The Missouri Breaks (1976); and the mournful drama Four Friends (1981).
