A slight earthquake tremor is registered on a volcanic atoll where an American company is drilling for oil. The island’s tycoon, who is worried about scaring off the tourists, says it’s nothing serious but the engineer Hank Anderson fears that it might be the first signal of a devastating eruption. And when the volcano becomes active and causes a devastating tsunami, Hank and the few others who are willing to follow him set sail on a very dangerous adventure to reach the safe side of the island. The final flashes of the 1970s catastrophe genre, produced, like The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno, by Irwin Allen, who forced a reluctant Newman to accept the role. One of the final performances by William Holden, who died one year after the movie was released.

James Goldstone
(Los Angeles, USA, 1931 – Shaftsbury, USA, 1999), the son of Jules Goldstone, one of the first Hollywood agents and one of America’s first TV producers, he began working in TV in the mid-1950s, directing episodes of many series, including Rawhide (1959), Dr. Kildare (1961), and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1965). In 1966, he directed the pilot episode of the series Star Trek (1966) and later became its most famous director. In film, he worked with Paul Newman on Winning and When Time Ran Out, with Robert De Niro on The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight (1971), and with Sidney Poitier on Brother John (1971).
