New York, 1841. Solomon Northup is a free African American violinist, married with two children. Deceived by the promise of a job as a musician, he is drugged, kidnapped, and sold into slavery in the South. Stripped of his identity and forced to work on plantations in Louisiana, Solomon is first owned by the kind but timid William Ford and then by the cruel Edwin Epps, who exercises absolute power over his slaves. Forced to remain silent and not rebel, Solomon, along with other slaves, endures violence and humiliation and witnesses his master’s morbid obsession with the young slave Patsey. Twelve years after his abduction, thanks to an encounter with a Canadian abolitionist, he will finally find freedom. The most famous film by Steve McQueen and Chiwetel Ejiofor, winner of three Oscars.
