HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE

COME SPOSARE UN MILIONARIO
by Jean Negulesco
Country: USA
Year: 1953
Duration: 95'

Three New York models rent a luxurious apartment as a trap for prospective husbands. The cultured and sophisticated Schatze (Lauren Bacall) is torn between an older man and a younger one; Marzo (Betty Grable), more experienced and in love with a married man, meets a forest ranger at the game preserve where her lover has had her confined; while Pola (Marilyn Monroe), a scatterbrained and extremely nearsighted woman who refuses to wear glasses, boards the wrong plane and unexpectedly finds love. A remake of The Greeks Had a Word for Them, directed by Negulesco from a screenplay by Nunnally Johnson, this amusing comedy was unusually shot in CinemaScope – the second Fox film to use the innovative widescreen system, after The Robe – and gave its three leading actresses ample opportunity to showcase their talents.

film director

Jean Negulesco

(Craiova, Romania, 1900 - Marbella, Spagna, 1993) was a Romanian-born American film director and screenwriter. He moved to Vienna in 1915 and to Bucharest in 1919, where he worked as a painter before becoming a stage designer in Paris. He entered the film industry in 1934, initially as a sketch artist, then working as an assistant producer and second-unit director. By the late 1930s he had begun directing and screenwriting. At Warner Bros. he gained recognition for his short films, particularly a series of band shorts distinguished by his visual style. He made his feature-film directorial debut with Singapore Woman (1941) and received an Academy Award nomination for Johnny Belinda (1948).
