LA LIBERTAD DOBLE

DOUBLE FREEDOM
by Lisandro Alonso
Country: Argentina, Chile, Luxemburg, Germany, Italy, Uruguay, UK, USA
Year: 2026
Duration: 100'

Misael works alone in the woods, cutting down trees with his axe. An unexpected responsibility upends his life, disrupting the rhythm of his days in a natural world where human reason holds no meaning. Twenty-five years after *La libertad* (2001), Lisandro Alonso returns to the character of Misael to explore how the passage of time and the consequences of our choices transform our experience of freedom and our relationship with the world.

Biography

film director

Lisandro Alonso

(Argentina, 1973), after attending the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires, he began working in film in 1996, producing the short film La última llamada by Andrés G. Schaer. In 1998, he served as assistant director to Nicolás Sarquim on the film Sobre la tierra, and in 2001 he made his feature film debut with La libertad, presented in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, which established him as one of the most interesting young directors in contemporary cinema. His next film, Los muertos (2004), presented at the Directors’ Fortnight, received several international awards, including Best Film at the Turin Film Festival. With his subsequent films, Fantasma and Liverpool (2010), he returned to the Directors’ Fortnight, while Jauja, starring Viggo Mortensen, was again featured in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, as was Eureka (2013), the result of years of work and production. In 2026, he presented La libertad doble at the Directors Fortnight in Cannes, featuring the characters from his 2001 film.

Declaration

film director

“After finishing and presenting Eureka in 2023, I felt I needed to make and put my body into films that would fill me with vitality and let me enjoy the process of making, producing, and presenting them. It was then, in conversation with Ilse Hughan, my lifelong producing partner, that I considered going back to live again what it had been like to make my first film in 2001. Making it possible came thanks to the partnership with Augusto Matte and Fernando Bascuñán. I met Augusto in Rio de Janeiro and we spoke about the possibility of making this film without having to take paths that would delay its production. The result was a great experience once again, but also confirmation that you can make worthy films without falling into clichés.”
