Peggy (Marilyn Monroe), a young chorus girl working with her mother May at a burlesque club, is promoted to showgirl after a colleague leaves. Randy, the heir to a wealthy Cleveland family, falls in love with her, but May’s overprotectiveness stands in the way of their relationship. When Randy asks for Peggy’s hand in marriage, May tells him of her unhappy marriage to a man whose family disapproved of the entertainment world. Peggy and Randy’s union also seems doomed, but at their engagement party, the young man’s mother steps in to ensure that social differences do not stand in the way of their happiness.
